The Botstiber Scholars Program At Penn State
THE BOTSTIBER SCHOLARS PROGRAM AT PENN STATE
OVERVIEW
The Botstiber Scholars Program at Penn State offers
full scholarships to highly talented students of good
moral character who wish to study in the fields of
science, technology and commerce.
Botstiber Scholars are selected on academic
performance and leadership potential. They must
demonstrate financial need. They must also plan to
study science, technology or commerce and agree
to return to sub-Saharan Africa and generate
positive change in their communities.
Scholarship recipients receive tuition, room and
board, living expenses and transportation. All
scholars receive counseling (including career development guidance) and leadership training, and they
participate in social events and retreats. Internships in sub-Saharan Africa may also be arranged.
Botstiber Scholars enjoy a rigorous academic environment as well as an inviting social atmosphere at
Penn State. With supplemental programs designed to build leadership capacity, Botstiber Scholars are
well prepared to succeed in their careers and become leaders in their communities.
In 2016, four exceptional students were selected
from Rwanda, Zimbabwe, and Ghana and are now in
their second year at Penn State. In 2017, the
program expanded to include six new Botstiber
Scholars, who were selected from Rwanda, Kenya,
DR Congo and Ethiopia. These ten scholars are now
pursuing degrees in the College of Engineering and
the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences.
